In spite of his many years of study and apprenticeship, deep down, Kathanor of Arthas never really wanted to be a blood elf mage. He wanted to be … a lumberjack gnome pirate! Leaping from ship to ship throughout the mighty seas of Azeroth! The Defias! The Southsea! The Bloodsail! The plucky little Blackwater! The smell of freshly oiled cannons! The clink of gold coins! Kathanor has long suppressed these urges, but doing The Cleansing and fighting his inner turmoil has brought it all back to the surface. How soon until he starts attacking Booty Bay Bruisers?

Blizzard continues to update their minisite — the latest newness is the posting of a new Blizzcast, in two parts. In part one, Karune of the Starcraft community team interviews Chris Metzen, Rob Pardo, and Samwise Didier about the history of Warcraft as a whole (it’s celebrating the 15th anniversary as well this year), and part two has our friend Nethaera talking to J. Allen Brack, Tom Chilton, and Jeff Kaplan about the game itself. As is usual with the official podcast, there’s not much new information here (especially if you’ve already read through some retrospective press), but both interviews are worth a listen (and/or a read through the transcript) if only to hear these guys all in a room together, joking around about old times.
Elsewhere on the site, they’ve started posting written interviews as well. The first one is with Shane Dabiri, former lead producer on the game, and there are faded-out spots for J. Allen Brack, Tom Chilton, and Jeff

Here we see an excellent example of an undead warlock in the wild. After being chased out of her natural habitat of dark basements and abandoned crypts by maurading dwarves, she attempts to camouflage herself among the flowers and lilypads outdoors. Unfortunately, the distinct lack of bright colors in the warlock’s wardrobe will prove her undoing. Her brown outfit and white skin makes her easy prey, and seconds after this picture was taken, she was eaten by a grue. (Thanks to Chuffchuff of <Kids Next Door> on Hakkar for the pic!)

After trying to entrap her Thanksgiving dinner with a cleaver, a polearm, a guildmate’s Fireball spell, a carefully constructed gnomish engineering device, and an errant feral druid in cat form, Nayuki of Demon Soul finally had to admit defeat. The turkey was simply smarter than she was. Her only hope for a decent holiday meal was to wait until the turkey’s back was turned, and then blindly stab away with her knife. Surely that would work.

We at WoW.com are a sentimental bunch. I always privately thought that, but now I’ve got the sort of ironclad proof beloved by canny blackmailers everywhere. In the weeks before WoW’s 5th anniversary, a backchannel team discussion sprang up on our memories of the game and the players with whom we’ve had the great privilege of playing, and we decided to collect them here in honor of WoW’s birthday.
Some of us are hardcore gamers with lots of experience with other games. For others, WoW was their first (and in some cases, only). Most of us raid, and some of us PvP or theorycraft. A few of us are nuts for hardware arguments, but others are surprised to discover that WoW does not actually play on our toasters. Many of us are pretty easygoing in our approach to the content; others would sell their grandmothers up the river for a server-first. One among us hates warlocks, and everyone else just hates rogues (unless you’re Chase).
But we do share one thing in

New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW’s newest players to the basics of a good start in the World of Warcraft. Visit WoW.com’s WoW Rookie Guide for links to all our tips, tricks and how-to’s.
Training up your spells and abilities used to be fairly complex — not the process itself, mind you, but figuring out where to go. Trainers were tucked into obscure nooks and crannies all over the world, a real incentive to go exploring. Several infamous profession trainers were even located inside instances; you had to fight your way in, bags stuffed with all the mats for the next batch of recipes you hoped to train, and skill up like mad so you could buy the next available recipe while your group kept the area clear.
Training is much simpler in today’s World of Warcraft, but it’s hardly intuitive. We’ve pulled together a few notes on training for class spells and abilities, professions, riding skill for mounts and weapon skills, to help steer you to

Want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women? Blood Sport investigates the entirety of all-things arena for gladiators and challengers alike. C. Christian Moore, multiple rank 1 gladiator, examines the latest arena strategy, trends, compositions and more in WoW.com’s arena column.
We’ve come to a fork in our musical journey, where I’m going to start branching into genres and/or artists you might not have heard of (if you have, great, feel free to tell me what a giant douche I am for underestimating you). Today we’ll be listening to one of my all-time favorite indie-folk tracks, Cold Cold Water, by Mirah. The Star Wars tribute video is a nice touch, if you’re into that kind of thing (I am).
Last time, we went over hunters, mages, and paladins. This week, we’re going to round out the classes with the exception of rogues and warriors (they’re not getting any high-impact PvP changes at all).

Two Bosses Enter … but only One Boss Leaves, in WoW.com’s series of fantasy death matches. This season’s combatants come from the original five-man instances of Wrath of the Lich King.
How crazy does crazy get? Keristrasza’s brand of crazy was mind-numbing enough to drop her from the skies in this week’s Two Bosses Thunderdome. Eregos maintained the upper hand with a full 50% of the vote in this week’s fantasy deathmatch.
“In her maddened state, I’d say Keristrasza is at a large disadvantage,” wrote DruidGuard. “All too eager for her own death, driven mad and facing down one of the major blue dragons that helped imprison her, Keristrasza might very well eat a full Planar Shift burst to the face. Not to mention she’ll be facing down a very angry Ley-Guardian Eregos every so often with his Enraged Assault.
“If she was on her A game, she might have a chance with careful kiting and freezing, but in her current

All the World’s a Stage, and all the orcs and humans merely players. They have their stories and their characters; and one player in his time plays many roles.
Some time ago, I had my first look at Warhammer Online, and wondered if that game treated roleplaying any differently from World of Warcraft. I wrote at some length about the significance of a written warning whenever someone signs up for a roleplaying realm for the first time, but I also noticed that Warhammer actually had another very special feature that could be beneficial for WoW roleplayers, namely the “Tome of Knowledge.” Playing around with this a little bit made me think about how Blizzard could make something similar, which would go a long way toward enriching the experience of the game, not only for roleplayers, but for all players. Warhammer’s Tome of Knowledge is not without it’s flaws, of course — I can surely imagine a better one for WoW to adopt, but at the moment WoW has
